More Than 27,000 Square Feet, Finished with a Personal Touch
A driveway this size is a defining part of a property. For these Lumberton homeowners, resurfacing offered an opportunity to move beyond repeated paint touch-ups and create a fresh, cohesive look with a color blend they helped choose.
Carolina Flexshield Rubber Surfacing completed the project in September 2026, bringing together careful preparation, a custom rubber blend, and attention to the details around the home.
A Thoughtful Start
The homeowners first contacted Carolina Flexshield Rubber Surfacing in fall 2025 about their painted driveway, which required frequent touch-ups and repainting.
Jesse Phoenix, Facility Manager, met with them for an initial consultation to discuss the project. With more than 27,000 square feet to consider, the homeowners took their time deciding how to proceed.
They reconnected in spring 2026, ready for another consultation and a quote. Joel visited the property, measured the driveway, and helped move the project into the planning stage.
A Color Blend Chosen Just for Their Home
The color selection was a collaborative part of the process. After reviewing several samples, the homeowners settled on a custom combination:
-
60% black
-
20% beige
-
20% brown
The blend pairs a dark base with warm, neutral accents, giving the expansive driveway a coordinated finish selected to reflect the homeowners’ preferences.
Preparing Every Crack, Gap, and Transition
Before installing the rubber surface, the crew removed loose paint and filled gaps and cracks in the existing driveway. They also prepared transitions in the concrete where the new surfacing would end.
Those edges matter. Careful preparation helps bring the different areas of the project together, especially where the driveway meets garage entrances and adjoining surfaces.
Extra Care at the Garage Entrances
One part of the preparation called for particularly close attention: grinding transitions at the bottom of the garage doors while vehicles remained inside.
The doors needed to stay open approximately 12 inches during the work. To help contain dust and debris, the crew sealed off the openings and used grinders connected to HEPA-filtered vacuums.
That extra care reflects the approach taken throughout the project—considering both the surface being installed and the property around it.
A Large Installation Through the Summer Heat
Altogether, the crew installed 18 tons of rubber and binder, using a high-strength aromatic binder across the entire driveway.
Installation began on August 10 and finished on September 11, 2026. With temperatures regularly around 95°F and no shade over the work area, the crew started early each day to avoid some of the afternoon heat.

A Fresh Finish, Shaped by the Homeowners
What began as a conversation about a driveway that needed continual repainting became a complete resurfacing project with a custom finish.
The completed driveway brings more than 27,000 square feet together in one coordinated look. From the samples the homeowners reviewed to the carefully prepared garage transitions, the details helped make this substantial transformation personal to their home.
